Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our last unit of the year is on the Human Body. It is a class favorite and we love to investigate and experiment but before we can do this we need to understand.
I work with 7-8 year old second graders.
I teach in a Title I school, with 97% of students qualifying for the free or reduced lunch program in our urban neighborhood. My students are amazing thinkers with great potential but they are growing up in an area of high poverty and high crime.
My Project
I am asking for a class set of Human Body vocabulary readers to work on a literacy and science unit. These books are great because they have captions, glossaries and bold words that reinforce nonfiction reading skills and develop vocabulary. Before we can make diagrams on the human body we need to understand how it works. Before we can make experiments on lung capacity we need to understand how our lungs work. We need these books to UNDERSTAND how our body works.
Experiments come after subject knowledge.
Help my students learn about the human body and understand how our systems work together. STEM education is crucial but the materials sometimes unattainable. Help provide this education pillar needed so we can understand and then experiment.
