Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in our school often come from working class and/or economically poor homes. However, due to our school's Steampunk Reading Club they are developing rich imaginations!
Our school lies in a high poverty/high crime attendance zone in our city.
Drugs, gangs, shootings, absent parents are a part of their everyday lives. Our students come from culturally diverse families, mainly African-American and Latino. We have many challenges, one of the greatest is the students' reading level. For many of them a book is a luxury their family cannot afford.
My Project
My students need books such as Steampunk Revolution, Infernal Devices, Book Club, and The Steampunk Gazette from the Steampunk genre for our school's reading club. We started a reading club in our school using books from the Steampunk genre. Steampunk uses 19th Century "retro-technology" like steam engines, zeppelins, steam powered cars to create an alternative, fantastic past that never was and/future that never can be. These are high adventure stories frequently featuring adolescent heroes about the same ages of my students who must take on adult responsibilities before they feel they are ready to do so.
I want our students to break the walls that poverty tries to impose on them.
They need to dream of other worlds, live other lives, see other visions. Please help my students, the next generation to see different possibilities for themselves.
