My Students

A hug machine, also known as a hug box, a squeeze machine, or a squeeze box, is a deep-pressure device designed to calm hyper-sensitive persons, usually individuals with autism spectrum disorders. The therapeutic, stress-relieving device was invented by Temple Grandin in 1965.

I am in charge of the Autism program at our elementary school in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

There are 18 students in my classroom who are constantly seeking out sensory input. Often students need deep pressure massage, brushing of their skin, lifting weights, and many other sensory breaks throughout their school day. These kids on the Autism Spectrum often have "melt downs" because they are not getting the proper sensory input they need throughout their day.

My Project

During the school day, the students in my classroom get 3-4 sensory breaks. Every day, they are at the same time of the day so it is consistent so we do not throw off their schedules. Having the steamroller will allow our students to select the appropriate amount of deep pressure that their bodies are seeking. Allowing students to receive the correct pressure input will calm them down and hopefully relieve some anxiety. With the steamroller I will be able to keep the students engaged for longer periods of time, and hopefully control some problematic behaviors anxiety causes.

Donations to our request will hugely impact our student's day.

The kids in my classroom will be getting the appropriate sensory input that they are craving and trying to ask for, but are unable to appropriately verbalize to us.
