Sprouting the Farmers of the Future

My students need a growing station and plant identification items to help them experience plant life cycles and better understand botany.

Mrs. McKibben Pickaway Elementary School
Circleville, OH Grades 3-5

Our 4th grade classroom is a community of learners. Being an inclusion teacher, I have to take into account the needs of each learner and plan my lessons accordingly. This involves using hands-on and visual lessons rather than relying solely on textbook material. This age group is especially exciting to work with because they are just beginning to see the world as a bigger picture. It is my job to help them get this picture into focus through engaging science lessons.

The 4th grade life science curriculum deals with plant growth and adaptations. The students and I are excited about plants and observing the growth cycle. We have plants scattered all over the school building and the student botanists must travel around to collect data. We are hoping for a centralized grow station in our own classroom so that students can constantly observe their projects.

We would like to learn more about the life cycle of plants using a Grow Lab. This grow lab will be located within the classroom and the student botanists will be able to check on their plants more frequently. In addition we would like to have two identification kits so that the students will not only be growing their own plants, but now they can start exploring the plants around them. Our school is lucky to be backed against a small wooded area so the leaf identification kit will be very helpful for the students to extend their learning to the world around them. Also the stamps and identification kits will help provide visuals for my special needs learners and may inspire my gifted learners to add to the specimens with other seeds and leaves. The plant bingo game will be a fun way to review what we have learned. In addition I want to introduce the students to hydroponics. I feel that this is the farming method of the future. We will be able to use the grow station to integrate hydroponic farming. These learning activities can also lead to looking at plant growth in space and a study of the plants native to our state and region.

Your support of our plant study unit will allow the students to better understand the growing cycle of plants. We will be able to extend our study of plant adaptations and begin to identify the plants in their area. You will also be helping me to provide hands-on learning experiences for all of my students. These student centered activities will hopefully inspire some future botanists who develop new ways to sustain our population's agricultural needs.
