My Students

Do you remember childhood days of marveling at nature's wonders from intricate spider webs to the magic of lightning bugs? Help us capitalize on the natural curiosity children have about the world and its animal life by examining the miraculous metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly.

Our students are full of wonder and curiosity at our school of inquiry.

Questions abound as learners actively seek to make sense of the world around them through careful observation, follow-up questioning, research and hands-on investigations. We are housed in a small rural school of approximately 250 students in a Title 1 school district.

My Project

Within a Title 1 district, there are pockets of student populations that will never venture farther than their own backyards. Join us in nurturing their awareness of the amazing insect world and the interdependence they have with plant life. We will actively engage in careful observations of butterfly eggs, journal their daily and weekly development, and look closely during the busy life of the caterpillar prior to and leading up to its amazing metamorphosis in the pupa stage. Eyes will fill with amazement and wonder as the butterflies emerge - leaving behind their past lives only to repeat the cycle again with new eggs. The related literature will solidify their learning and reinforce science concepts as they grow to appreciate nature and literature.

Students from all walks of life will work together in our learning community to witness a miracle of nature take place. This opportunity will serve as a memorable touchstone experience that students will reference throughout the year as we explore other cycles in our natural world.
