My Students

Do you remember how important it is to be comfortable while "getting lost" in a good book? The desks in my language arts classroom can be less than appealing to readers when encouraging them to get lost in a good book! When given the choice, many students leave their chairs for the floor.

I teach a group of mixed-ability sixth-eighth grade students reading and language arts.

Despite many years of struggling, my students are benefiting from an intensive reading curriculum and are making great gains. Reading is finally becoming more of a pleasure than a chore. During class time, I have included a monitored independent reading portion every day into my class. I know how important it is to read something you enjoy, and to be able to read for a long period of time. During this time, which can vary from 15 minutes to a whole class period, I meet with students to discuss their reading, sometimes take running records, and recommend new books. Currently students sit on the floor, lean up against the wall or stay in their desks.

My Project

During this reading time, I let students sit where they feel the most comfortable in my room. Comfortable seating, such as the beanbag chairs I requested, will transform my classroom into much sought-after reading spots where students can get lost in their books! Every reading teacher's dream! Donations to this project will help me instill and continue my endeavor to emphasize the importance of reading a good book, and to do it in a comfortable space. I cannot wait to introduce this space to my students!
