SpEd Sensory Items For Amazing Students!

My students need sensory items in order to succeed in the classroom such as sand, magnet building sets, and gears. Sensory items are used for academic and social learning. Sensory items are used for self-regulation.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Mayhan's classroom raised $505

My Students

Students in my classroom use sensory items on average every 10 minutes. For kids on the autism spectrum, they need extra sensory input in order to be able to regulate and continue on with their academic and social play. When children become unregulated, they have melt-downs and any learning stops.

The students in my class are amazing!

They are going to be great contributors to society when they grow up. They are funny, smart and very loving. They just happen to learn "differently." Kids on the autism spectrum who are high-functioning tend to fall through the cracks in "typical" classrooms, because they have melt-downs. One simple way to alleviate these meltdowns is to give them sensory input. Once this is done, the learning is able to continue.

My Project

There are many ways to utilize sensory items. Students use the tactile items to give sensory input, so that they are able to concentrate on their learning or play instead of being bombarded by unwanted stimuli. Sensory items are used during breaks, academics and play. Because of this, they are used continuously throughout the day. The great thing about sensory items is that the students love them and they are learning to regulate themselves. This learning how to self regulate will benefit them as they get older.

Having a wide arrange of sensory items in my classroom will allow these amazing students to learn all of the academic areas that students in typical classroom learn.

I am constantly amazed at how just giving extra items and attention help these students succeed!
