My 1st grade students are amazing! I teach children with differing "abilities" who need extra supports in order to learn. About 80% of the students in my school are in special education, and most of them have autism. The students in my class learn best utilizing hands-on practices. Hands-on activities not only help the students retain information better, but depending on the project it also helps regulate their sensory needs. They take many sensory breaks throughout the day. Some of their favorites are Wii Dance and Go Noodle. I believe in keeping the bar high for my students and teach my class like any other regular education room; however looking at individual needs and different "ways to teach" each child means better success for each of them. Keeping the bar high is so important! I love watching them grow and develop daily!
