My Students

When you were in second grade do you remember becoming a detective to find out the qualities of leadership for implementation for your own life? My students will begin their journey of becoming a leader, by developing life skills that will help them be successful in the 21st century.

As a young child, most of us had never considered the word leadership unless our parents were political figures or community leaders.

We are implementing The Leader in Me initiative in our school, which helps the students gain accountability, self-direction, teamwork, responsibility, problem-solving, and creativity. My students have been adapting to this new initiative, but as they return home each day they are faced with the constant struggles that does not necessarily equal what this initiative requires of them. These students have lived in poverty-stricken situations most of their lives, but they are still expected to acquire the life skills mentioned above to be able to function in the 21st century. With a purposeful application of the 7 Habits in The Leader in Me initiative, the students will be able to overcome the odds and statistics that have been placed before them. They understand that an education is the key to making a plan to obtain excellent jobs for a more secure future.

My Project

All students should have the opportunity to experience technology, especially in the early years of life. With the purchase of 2 netbooks, the students will be able to create a variety of documents using word processing, PowerPoint presentations, and websites to demonstrate how they have learned about leaders in our school, community, and state. The 2 microphones will help the students work on their public speaking skills and give them confidence to produce statements and speeches concerning leadership and how they implement this characteristic in their lives. The digital recorder is a necessity in this project because it provides the students with the chance to interview other students and adults to learn more about this leadership initiative. In our classroom, we believe that all students are leaders who simply need exposure to the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People along with examples to live by. Our class motto includes each child becoming a leader in something that matters to them.

By creating leaders as early as the 2nd grade, we will help develop a catchy trend that allows leadership to be the "cool" thing that every child wants to do!

These students are our next medical personnel, teachers, law enforcement, construction workers, etc. and as educators it is our job to equip them with the academic and social skills to be successful in the 21st century. Join me in cultivating the next leaders who will be able to problem-solve, work together, and be creative innovators!
