My Students

"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." -Victor Hugo We are trying daily to light these fires.

Our school is small, built in the 1930's.

We are always trying to find new and different ways to engage our students. With a number of low income students, the only place they have the opportunity to read is at school. We are blessed with resources to receive good quality books. Now we need to organize these books in ways that the students will be able to find such book easily.

My Project

Imagine you are a child that loves animals. Your teacher tells you to pick books you want to read, you go to the bookcase and stop. All you see is a bookcase full of books not sorted! You give up, you can't find the books you want. Now imagine, your teacher spends the summer organizing your books by genre. You are the same student, you don't like to read, but now when asked to pick books on a topic you will like, you go right to the basket marked animals. You find that book about elephants and suddenly you imagine you are on a safari with said elephant. There is that spark, now you want to read more books about not just animals, but places where elephants live. We have just lit a fire within a student that will live within forever!

I divide all readers into two classes: Those who read to remember and those who read to forget.
