Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Technology rules society today and tablets are everywhere, except in our school. Due to budget cuts, our school's technology is way behind the times. I want my students to have the ability to access everything available on a wireless tablet. With a Kindle Fire, the possibilities are endless!

My school has almost 1100 students in a high poverty, Title 1, inner city middle school, where every student receives a free lunch.

Many of them have to deal with gangs in their neighborhood, and some even are in foster care or are homeless. As the school AVID Coordinator, and a history teacher, I like to expose all of my students to cutting edge technology, even if it is not available in the school setting. I brought my personal Kindle Fire to school and you should have seen the student's eyes light up! Curiosity is valued and at our school, answers are often the beginning of the discussion, and technology is integrated into all areas of learning. I know the 146 students I personally instruct everyday love the use of technology in the classroom and get excited about learning whenever we get to use the laptops or the smart board. Getting to use a Kindle Fire would literally put endless educational opportunities at their fingertips.

My Project

The Kindle Fire is amazing and would literally put millions of books, magazines, websites, apps, and songs in my students hands. My students will be able to choose ANY book, read it, and share their experiences in a literacy circle during class. With access to magazines like Newsweek and Time, my history students will be able to research current events and use the information to write an essay about what they have learned. With websites at their fingertips, my students will have access to video clips, and much more. Also, the website that corresponds with our classroom textbook has games, crossword puzzles, and flash cards my students can use to enrich their learning experience of the content they have been presented in class. Lastly, with the Kindle Owner's lending library my students will be able to borrow thousands of books for free. I can't wait to open up a whole new world of learning to my students with the Kindle Fire.

When I brought my personal Kindle Fire into my classroom, there was an air of excitement that I have never felt before!

My students were ready to do whatever they had to do for a chance to use it. By adding 2 Kindle Fires to my classroom, I will have built in motivation for my students to get their work done so they can use the Kindle Fire. There are countless uses for the Kindle Fire. It is an e-reader, a web browser, a library, and a concert hall, and the educational apps are incredible, too!
