My Students

Just like Buzz Lightyear doesn't like space invaders, neither do kindergartners! In our classroom we believe that moving is learning! We utilize our treadmill, air walker, balance balls, rockers and wiggle chairs throughout the day, BUT sometimes we need a tool to help us define our personal space.

We are a Title 1 school with a diverse population.

Several of our students are English Language Learners with limited knowledge of the English language when they enter kindergarten. We have very large class sizes, with much of the class benefiting from the Blessings in a Backpack program providing food for them to take home for the weekend. Our school is the oldest, continually operating school in our county, having just celebrated our 95th year. We are thrilled to be converting to a STEAM school this fall, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Our kindergarten classrooms will be partnering with the high school CAD classes to learn more about design and engineering.

My Project

I am hoping to purchase a large carpet featuring extra-roomy squares that give each child a place to call their own! Five color-coded rows and 30 spaces make it incredibly easy to divide the class into small groups for centers, engineering challenges, transitions, think-pair-share, dismissal and much more! We would use this carpet daily for math activities such as graphing, counting, and sorting. In addition to all of the other activities, this carpet would also help students focus by defining their personal space during whole group instruction. I am also hoping to purchase individual alphabet carpet squares for our classroom! They would be great for sequencing the alphabet, hopping from letter to letter, and spelling simple words. Parent volunteers would use them weekly during "Motor Moms and Dads" when they lead students through a series of activities to help students develop large motor skills.

My goal has always been for my students to LOVE school and instill in them a love of learning that will be the foundation for them throughout their entire life!

I work hard to make my classroom a warm, nurturing environment where students can't wait to be. So much of the academic and social success of kindergartners involves classroom management, social skills, problem solving, and getting along. The carpets would enhance the learning environment for every student in our classroom!
