Kids are told to eat all this "healthy" food, but hey really don't understand the reasons. I think by showing them how to grow their own awesome food, they will understand the meaning of healthy food and it will lead to a healthier lifestyle.
I'd normally talk about high poverty rates, etc., but it's not just low income people that eat unhealthy.
My students face economic challenges and health challenges of tomorrow. Financially, it makes sense for people to start growing their own food.
My Project
I'm asking that you help pay for a indoor grow lab, including seeds, potting soil, plastic pots, peat pots, and a pH tester. We can grow the vegetables in class and eat them in class. I don't think I need to explain the academic implications of this, but more importantly, it's the change in a healthy lifestyle that this could lead to for the students. The items I need to get this going all will help make our Science class more interesting. It's just a way for the kids to get some hands-on experience instead of sitting behind a desk all day.
There is no way our school can afford such a cool indoor "grow lab".
They don't "test in Science" in 5th grade, so you know there isn't extra money for this! I'm willing to put in the time. I just need help with the money. All the materials I mention are needed and will make for a wonderful experience for all the children to "grow".
