Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The future of our civilization depends on students and science!! These UV sensitive beads will teach my students about the abundance of UV radiation and how to protect themselves against it. The cloud chamber kit is a simple and exciting way to show them what radioactivity looks like.

My students attend school in the heart of Central California.

We are a small town, agriculture community with a huge sense of pride in our students and how far they have come in the past few years. 60% of our students participate in free or reduced lunch. A majority of our students (52%) are Hispanic or Latino. My students are college bound 10-12th graders who work hard every day in class, sports, clubs and volunteer in their community.

My Project

Chemistry is a difficult subject for many students! Its hard to understand what an atom or an ion or radiation is if you can't see it, touch it, and grasp at its significance. To be able to provide my students with the demonstrations they need and deserve, I have included in this project a set of UV radiation beads. These beads are sensitive to UV radiation and will turn from colorless to vividly multicolored in the sunlight. Putting sunscreen on them will prevent them from changing color and it is easy for students to see the benefit of wearing sunblock! The second item in this project is a cloud chamber kit. An alpha-emitting source is placed in the chamber and students will see ionized vapor trails shooting all over the chamber! This is an exciting way for them to see what radiation looks like in a safe and controlled setting (the walls of the chamber stop heavy alpha particles from escaping).

This donation will take one of the most difficult concepts for chemistry students, radiation and nuclear chemistry, and make it fun and simple for them to understand.

I know that these demonstrations will be among the most memorable of the school year and something my students will remember for a long time. Getting kids interested in science by making it fun is what I hope to do with this project! Thank you.
