Social Studies Is Important!

My students need social studies materials, including a complete set of Social Studies Resource Boxes and a book with 3-D historical maps, to begin to learn about the United States government, geography, and history.

My Students

It is important that students understand how the government works, have basic geography skills, and knowledge of United States history. Unfortunately, students in my class lack this basic knowledge. Please help provide materials to bring Social Studies back into the classroom.

Students in my classroom are curious about the world around them.

They remind me of a sponge, aching to soak up new knowledge. Unfortunately, opportunities for my students are very limited. Supplies and materials, especially for Social Studies, are extremely limited. The materials we do have are out of date and do not meet the new standards for our state's curriculum. Our school is located in a low-income neighborhood where 87% of our students participate in the free/reduced school lunch program. More than 75% of the students are of a minority, with 15% labeled as non-English speaking. Many of my students lack the support of family/guardians and rely solely on the adults at school to shape and mold them into successful students. However, these challenges do not get my students down. They greet me every morning happy to have a safe, secure environment to come to and are very eager to learn.

My Project

I am requesting several kits containing information, models and activities which will bring different areas of Social Studies to life for my students. Social Studies is a low priority subject at my school because it is not state tested at an elementary level. Some students leave our school without ever receiving a Social Studies lesson. Due to the low priority of this subject area, materials are nonexistent. With the materials I have requested I will be able to show the school that Social Studies is important and needs to be a part of our daily curriculum. These materials will teach my students a basic understanding of government, geography, and American history.

The students in my class will benefit in ways that we can only imagine.

These materials will help create children who know and understand how their government works, perhaps inspiring them to become involved in government one day. The materials will teach children our nation's history, creating children who value and understand our nation. Finally, these materials will open up a previously unexplored area for them, inspiring them to continue learning about the world around them.
