Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is an exciting, engaging place where students are challenged to experience the world in new and unfamiliar ways. Whether studying access to improved sanitation or nuclear proliferation, students strive to develop critical skills such as academic literacy and public speaking.
This inner-city high school is a thriving neighborhood institution where over 2500 students engage with challenging academics and participate in a fantastic array of extracurricular activities.
Most of our students have overcome some astounding challenges in order to become the incredible people they are today, as over 95% are classified as low-income, and most are the children of immigrants or immigrants themselves. The students who will participate in this proposed trip to NYC personify exceptional motivation and ability, having distinguished themselves as leaders in our Model United Nations Club throughout the year. They have been chosen for this opportunity because of their passion for global issues, the relentless preparation they have put into our Model United Nations conferences, and their overall commitment to academic excellence. Many of them are interested in careers in politics, law, education and international relations.
My Project
After a year of studying, investigating and role-playing the United Nations, this project will allow our academic fantasies to become reality as we visit the real United Nations headquarters and interview a contact who works for the United Nations Fund. This trip is not only the culmination of an entire year in the Model United Nations Club, but will also connect to years of student learning in history, geography, sociology and literature courses. Not only will students be able to experience the modern, global metropolis that NYC represents by sampling ethnic cuisines and strolling through diverse neighborhoods, but they will also be able to examine NYC's history as a mecca for global migrants with tours of the Tenement Museum, and Ellis Island . Additionally, students will examine America's contemporary struggles with identity and multiculturalism at the Tolerance Museum and 9-11 Museum. Finally, students will interact with travelers from around the globe at Hosteling International.
Many of my students have never left their neighborhood, but all are passionate about global issues and international relations.
By participating in this social, political and historic tour of NYC, they will gain a profound understanding of our nation's history and their own place in it, while simultaneously experiencing everything the world's most international city has to offer. As they study to become diplomats, lawyers and educators, this eye-opening trip will remain a source of inspiration.
