My wonderful school is an extremely large neighborhood institution in a major Illinois city. We accept any and all adolescents from the community, as well as others who want to take advantage of one or more of our great academic or extracurricular program. Nearly all of our students are ethnic minorities, many of whom are first or second generation Americans who will be the first of their families to graduate high school. English is a second language for many, and most of our students qualify as "low-income." The class participating in this particular project are all highly motivated and college-bound seniors who elected to take this course because of their passion for global education and desire to engage with critical issues in the world. The class as a whole is outgoing, curious and compassionate, which means I greatly look forward to teaching them every day. Several of these students are even pursuing careers in international relations or public health.
