My students need the black canson paper and art stix to complete a project on the artists Georgia O Keeffe and Toulouse Lautrec.

Out with the wash? We hope not but we plan to investigate soap resist while studying the artists Georgia O'Keeffe and Toulouse Lautrec!

We are a Title I public school with a high poverty rate with the best students in the world!

My students do not ask for much and are grateful for the opportunities they are given. We are the only high school in our city but one of five in our county.

My Project

The project I want to do with my students is called a soap resist. The idea is that the students draw with soap on the canson paper. Then color over the soap with the art stix. Once their work is done, they rinse off the paper with water and all of the soap washes away leaving the canson paper to show through!

This project requires two main materials: canson paper and art stix.

Neither of these items fit in the budget that I have. The canson paper is best to use because it will not bleed when it is wet like construction paper does. Unfortunately the paper is almost $3 a sheet. Also, the art stix cover a broader range of paper and have less wax in them allowing the color to cover the soap. Again, a great product but too expensive for us to purchase. I ordered a box for each table of four to share.
