My students need a variety of snacks to help keep them focused throughout the school day.

My Students

It is difficult to focus on school when you are hungry. Many of our students do not get breakfast at home or have money for lunch or snacks throughout the day. In our resource classroom for students with behavioral issues, we provide snacks so students are able to concentrate on their work.

Our students have been identified as having difficulties with emotion management and there are many obstacles standing in the way of graduating.

They need a smaller, more supportive environment in order to be successful in school. We provide counseling and behavior modification to these students in resource level classes. For some students their basic needs are not being met, so we try to provide such items as clothing, toiletries, and food. Besides offering snacks throughout the day, we also have periodic cookouts to celebrate their successes in school. The odds against these students may have increased because of the F5 tornado last year. Several of them have lost their homes and all their possessions. Some of their parents have lost their places of employment. Some of their friends have been forced to move away. Their school has been destroyed and they are forced to finish their high school educations in makeshift facilities.

My Project

For some of our students, the only meals they get are those we serve at school. We have requested snack items so we can continue to provide food during the day. The extra things that we do for our students show them that we care. The students feel supported and respected in our program.

Prior to the tornado, our students were facing obstacles that were preventing them from being successful in school.

Now most of these students are facing trauma, homelessness, and increased financial hardship. A high school education has moved further down on their list of priorities. Providing a smaller, more structured environment in which they can get their basic needs met may help them to stay in school.
