Smooth and Steady Wins the Reading Race

My students need to be able to hear themselves read in order to improve fluency. Using digital voice recorders (12 are needed) is a research-based strategy that will help them improve.

My Students

Help our students understand what they are reading! It is impossible to improve reading comprehension if the way students are reading is choppy and disjointed. Our school wants to increase our Reading EOG scores, increase the LOVE of reading, and make it a daily habit for the future.

Our students are high need.

Many come from homes where reading is not modeled or there are no reading resources around the house. Our school has already gone into the community to do book drives and hand out magazines to parents so that EVERYONE will catch the reading bug. Using digital voice recorders is the next step now that we have students reading more. We need students to be able to really "hear" what they are reading so they can increase comprehension and read more smoothly. After all, who likes to read if you have no idea what you are reading about?! Using digital voice recorders is a research-based strategy that our school has investigated to solve our reading comprehension and fluency weaknesses. We know that daily use of a digital voice recorder could be an intervention used during literacy centers, guided reading time, or morning work so that all students can benefit from this resource.

My Project

Every student in our school will be able to benefit from digital voice recorders. We will have 12 available to be shared among the school. Ideally, each grade level will have two to use at all times. When special projects require a more complete set, grade levels will be able to check them out from the media center. The main focus of the digital voice recorders will be daily use of recording reading passages and monitoring fluency and reading comprehension. However, we will also be able to utilize the digital voice recorders to record letter sounds (phonics) that can be saved to the computer. As a result, teachers will be able to have consistency in the way they are teaching phonics from Kindergarten thru second grade.

We are a school that is technology poor compared to many other schools in our county.

Every year, the budget is cut even more. We are a hard working staff who uses every resource to try and get materials for our students. Due to our high-need population, we do not have the luxury of asking parents to support us in meeting our technology goals. We all know that reading is a huge component of academic success. It is a part of every other subject students will learn. We can make a difference!
