My Students

I teach in a hybrid charter high school that focuses on serving the needs of at-risk students. I teach math using a "flipped" classroom model so students get introduced to a math topic through online videos and exercises. The problem is that many of my students lack access to a dedicated computer.

As mentioned previously, my students are disproportionately low-income (free and reduced lunch) and often have experienced disruptions in their education due to economic dislocations, having to move, missing school, sometimes deficient parenting skills.

I have found that students who can effectively use Khan Academy, for example, are able to fill many gaps in their knowledge and allow them to move forward and catch up with their peers. In addition, by using a computer-based program of math instruction, students can progress at their own pace. For nearly all my students, the main reason they have come to my school is because they have failed in the regular schools. It is my professional and personal goal to guide as many of those students as possible toward a more successful and promising future. I would like to build an inventory of chromebooks that students can check out overnight to work on their coursework (all homework, not just math).

My Project

Students will check out chromebooks overnight to use for homework. They will access their coursework through learning management systems like Edmodo. They can complete projects such as presentations, data analysis, essays on Goggle Apps and share with their teachers requiring no paper, printer, or ink.

These chromebooks will level the playing field for my students, who have already dealt with a lot of disadvantages.

My hope is that students will use the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to gain entry into job training and vocational ed programs that will lead to a more promising future for them and future generations.
