Smart Mouth

My students need a Gripstarchute, songs, and a DVD to help us use it and become healthy.

My Students

Our principal is in charge of our Fuel Up to Play 60 program. She started eating healthy through the program as she took on a personal interest to become healthy herself. She has lost over 80lbs on this program and is encouraging students, parents and teachers to lose weight.

Most of our students live in a poverty-stricken area of Arkansas.

Our free/reduced lunch is 93% and we proudly have a 41% Hispanic population. This Arkansas area is in an area of the city no one really wants to live as it is known as the Ghetto. Our charter school has been in operation for 3 yrs and has a waiting list. The charter school is known for enrolling students who could not thrive at the surrounding schools. The students come to us challenged academically, and often with behavior issues. It amazing to see the many students who come with a strong background of knowledge after going through so many challenges. The students either are brought to grade level or come up to proficient and advanced knowledge in many core subject areas. The school provides tutoring and extended days to ensure that students are disciplined and prepared to go to college upon graduating from this high school.

My Project

Fuel Up to Play 60 has been in our school for 2 years and our Principal has taken on the program to ensure that all of our students have an opportunity to be healthy. Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school program that encourages the availability and consumption of nutrient-rich foods, along with 60 minutes of daily physical activity. The program offers bold leadership for child health and wellness through the support of many businesses and industry leaders. We have selected student-leaders to work along with our principal to continually inspire our teachers, students, and parents to lose weight and to eat healthy. We need a Gripstarchute, songs, and a DVD to help us use it and become healthy. The resources will further support daily physical activity through PE classes and recreation time during our Saturday Academy. Students will learn how to work together as a team as they are building a respect for their bodies and healthy eating as they are growing into adults. The resources will also support self-confidence to lose weight while feeling good about self.

This project is important because of our desire to continue to be healthy as a school.

The program has strengthened our relationship as a team of educators. We have discovered the importance of being healthy as we've learned of students suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure through this Fuel Up to Play 60 program. Thank you for the help!
