Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of the special education program at my school. Six years ago, we started our garden with 3 beds and grew tomatoes and lettuce. Now, we have have 17 beds with all kinds of veggies and also some fruit. We have eaten from the garden, but we also donate food to a local food bank.
My students use our classroom garden to learn so many things.
We have learned to eat a healthy diet, learned how to care for plants, and learned that gardens require sun, water and rich earth to grow well. When we harvest our garden, my students get super excited! They remember planting the seeds, then watch them sprout and grow over the weeks. Finally, we use the great veggies to make fresh salads to supplement our lunches and cook from some great recipes. My students are learning independence, so it is vital for them to understand good, healthy eating habits. When they first come into my class, many of them won't even taste our salads, but by the time their 1st year is done, they are eating huge bowls of fresh greens. It's truly exciting to see how much they love planting, caring for and harvesting our plants!
My Project
We have chores in our classroom every day. One very important one is to water the garden and help to maintain it on a daily basis. Because the garden has grown so large, it takes quite awhile to water. Also, during school breaks and holidays, someone has to be recruited from our staff to take care of watering the garden so it will be ready for the next year. We desperately need a sprinkler system, pipes, tee and a nipple that will assist my students in caring for their work. We will still have our hands full with weeding, planting, harvesting and preparing healthy recipes, but a sprinkler system would really ensure that our garden will continue to thrive, even when we aren't in session at school.
It is so important for young adults to eat healthy foods.
Our garden also teaches a multitude of hands-on lessons like Botany, how to maintain a healthy diet, class collaboration, giving back to our community and, also exercise when we get out and work in it. Our school garden has literally changed what my students eat, and what they like to make at school. It also spills over into their personal lives at home, because my students also want to grow things at home!
