SIMS: On The Outside Looking In

My students need live organisms and other resources, to be able to construct open and closed habitats that go along with state frameworks.

My Students

Have you ever stopped to watched a bug crawl up a stick and wondered what it would be like to live as a bug? My students do not take the time to enjoy nature and develop a love for science. Creating aquariums and terrariums would give them the chance to explore their environment.

My school district consists of 99.9 percent African American.

They come from low socioeconomic environments. They have little knowledge of the outside world except for what they see on the television. My students are very loving and they make me feel like Santa Claus. They love science because they are always engaged during activities. Before school starts, I have at least one of them meeting me asking me what are we going to investigate today. This gives me the drive I need to try to make science exciting.

My Project

Watching an animal grow from the egg and larvae stages will help students understand the developmental life stages of animals. They will engage in maintaining and observing the animals in their habitats. They will document their studies in their lab journals which allows them to think as true scientists. Investigations in the classroom will help foster a love for their own environment and a life long love for nature. I will be able to use the habitats to help my student explore food webs and food chains. Also, they will examine limiting factors that will influence their habitats.

Support for this project will allow me the opportunity to bring nature into my classroom while fostering a love for science.

Since my school is a poverty school, with limited equipment and supplies, most of the supplies I have to purchase myself. This has limited my explorations. I feel this will allow my students an opportunity to engage in an hands on explorations while learning about their world.
