My students need pulleys and friction blocks to learn how the friction within a simple machine affects the amount of force needed to complete work.

My Students

If you learn better by doing something hands-on, you'll understand why I'd love to get this equipment for my students. When teaching about Mechanical Advantage and Efficiency, students find it hard to understand what the equations mean without performing a lab activity. Please help my 8th graders!

My school is in a busy suburb on Long Island, New York.

The district is composed of families with all different socio-economic statuses. Many of the kids have negative influences in their lives, and I know that especially for the boys, an exciting lab activity gets them working with their hands also keeps their minds digging deeper. The budget is very tight, and we are not permitted to purchase large equipment.

My Project

I have shelves for Home Depot to use as inclines, but I don't have pulleys to use with them. The pulleys will be used with rope to pull the blocks up the planes. The amount of force needed to pull the different block surfaces up the planes will be measured with spring scales. Students will be able to directly measure the effect of increasing friction on the amount of force needed to do work! I am hoping that the ability to see and experience the effect of varying friction will improve their understanding of the mathematical problems they must understand.
