Silent Sustained Reading for Sophomores!

My students need a variety of interesting reading materials at their reading level to kickstart our new silent reading initiative. The titles include "17 Love Poems With No Despair" and "Into Thin Air," plus subscriptions to The New York Times Upfront.

My Students

We are trying to "catch" our struggling readers! Many times kids' reading needs are ignored after they leave elementary school, but the new federal Response to Intervention legislation is giving us a chance to take another look at how we can serve our high school kids' reading needs.

We are a suburban high school in southeastern Wisconsin that serves approximately 1400 students.

We serve students of all racial, ethnic, and economic levels. We also have students who speak a variety of home languages, from Hmong to Bulgarian to Mandarin. Like teenagers around the country, many of our students do not read outside of the school day, and they have lost the belief that reading can be a pleasure.

My Project

We are requesting a variety of interesting reading materials at high school reading levels. We are focusing primarily on interesting nonfiction, including the NY Times magazine for teens, true crime stories, historical accounts, poetry, graphic novels, and biographies. We are also including a smattering of contemporary fiction. Our goal is to use these materials to "seed" classroom libraries for ten sophomore homerooms, as we are beginning a Silent Sustained Reading initiative next year.

We are creating a Silent Sustained Reading period one day a week next year, and our sophomores are the pilot group.

Therefore, it is crucial that they have access to interesting material that will engage them in this new endeavor!
