Show Me The Money!

My students need money math manipulatives to learn how to count groups of coins and also have further practice with counting money.

My Students

Everyone needs money, which means everyone needs to be able to count money. Money is such a hard concept for first graders. Money manipulatives would make this task so much easier for my students. Educational research shows that math concepts are better understood with the use of manipulatives.

I have 16 first grade students who love math!

Most of my students are very eager to learn, but do not get much support at home. My students are very active, sweet children. They love to learn, but sometimes need fun, hands-on activities to get them motivated. 14 out of 16 of my students come from high poverty situations and are on free school lunch. At school, they get to escape from the "reality" of their home lives and just be themselves. They don't have younger siblings to take care of at school, nor do they have to cook dinner for themselves or clean for their parents. They do not have a lot of support at home. Because of the lack of support, I have 10 students who are below grade level in math, but they continue to try their best. They want to learn and be successful.

My Project

If we were to receive the items that were requested, I would be able to make learning more fun and relate it more to the students' lives. With the money dice, we could play games in small group instruction to better understand counting sets of coins. The allowance and electronic coin games would also be great for small group instruction and/or math centers. A lot of learning takes place when children are playing and having these games and math centers would allow them to play and learn at the same time. The cash registers would provide extra money counting practice while at the same time, giving students real world experience. I believe the more that we relate it to their lives, the more interested they will be in whatever is trying to be taught.

By donating to this project, you are providing my students with a chance to apply what they have learned with counting groups of coins.

They will be able to play games to further their knowledge and relate more to real-world experiences. Who knows...maybe next time they go to the store with their parents, they'll be able to give the cashier the correct change!
