My students need a portable LCD projector to connect their iPads, computers and other devices and be able to share their projects, reading, and other things. They also need a projection screen, adapters, and protection plan.
My ESL students love to share with me and their classmates what they have been learning. This year, our students will be using iPads in school for the first time. An LCD projector will allow our students to share with a group what they have been learning, exploring and creating on their iPads.
We are an urban Title I public elementary school serving students in Pre-K to 5th grade.
Our school has a BioSmart program where students learn about science and investigations and a dual language program where students learn in English and Spanish.
Our school has a large ESL population with more than half of our more than 700 students speaking a language other than English at home. Some of those languages are: Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Oromo, Tagalog, Chin, Vietnamese, Tigrinya and American Sign Language. Our children love soccer, arts and reading.
Our staff loves our students. We are the leading school in the Parent Teacher Home Visit Project for our district. Many of our staff go to visit our students at their homes, coach them at sports after school and create enrichment opportunities. Since I have been teaching here I have been able to build relationships with families who keep coming back to our school and want more of their children and relatives to be in our loving school.
My Project
If this project gets funded students we will be able to share what is on their iPad screens with a bigger audience and take pride in showing what they know. Using their iPad cameras together with the projector as document cameras we can also share other student work and demonstrations not created on the iPad.
Students are very exited to be able to use iPads this year. They have already been looking for resources to read books, explore the universe and paint. Since story telling is such an important part of what ESL students do having these materials will provide an outlet for their stories and creativity.
As an ESL teacher I don't have a Smart Board or any other way to share the students' work to a large group. I work in four different classrooms so the items I am requesting are easy to transport from room to room. Also, a projector screen can be used in my small room when I'm meeting with groups where there is not a lot of blank space wall available.
This project will allow my students to take ownership and pride in their work.
The art, presentations, outlines, photos and essays they create will not stay hidden away. Parents love to see our students' work during family events and the projector and screen can be a great tool to share with families and have students be the narrators of their school experiences.
Using the iPad camera and projector it will also be possible for students and teachers to model tasks and directions so all can see.
