Shakin' Up Shakespeare

My students need a variety of Shakespeare-related texts and materials to see how funny and amazing Shakespeare plays are...his gift with words will make them gifted with words as well as delighted with life.

My Students

My students struggle with language and haven't realized how much fun it is to play with language as Shakespeare does. They also need the complexity of his plots for sheer amazement and fascination. He deals with everyday emotions that they can connect with.

Our students are rural, blue collar, heavily influenced by church, television, and video games.

This is a hunting community where a rite of passage for both boys and girls is killing their first deer. Probably one fourth of the kids live in trailers. Though small, our town is a growing one, with new subdivisions being built to accommodate the rapid growth. In the midst of this environment are bright clever children who yearn to grow and absorb knowledge and push the boundaries of their own creativity. We are an arts poor community. These children need exposure to the arts, including drama, music, painting, literature, and more.

My Project

The group of books I have requested bring Shakespeare alive for elementary age children in grades 3 - 5. We will be able to read and understand the plays, specifically, The Tempest, Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, and perhaps Macbeth. Teachers cover Romeo and Juliet the world over later in school, and Hamlet is sometimes also done, but by the time students get to those plays they are bewildered by the complexity of the plots and don't get as much out of exposure to Shakespeare as they could. Playing with Shakespeare as children will develop their minds to delight in complicated stories and open up the universality of his themes. I have requested several stories from Shakespeare, retold by different authors, because each child learns in a different way. Some will respond most intensely to acting out the plays, some will connect by rewriting the plays, some will buy in to Shakespeare's message by reading storybook versions of his tales. These books will make him live.

I have exposed my students to Shakespeare in years past.

Parents have thanked me years later for doing this but I have always felt I could do a better job of getting more of the students to buy in to Shakespeare projects. The books you will provide will better my teaching and will provide high interest reading materials on my students' levels that will enable them to grasp what Shakespeare is talking about, and these books will increase their enjoyment and therefore their learning.
