My students need a seismometer to do real earthquake observations. They love hands-on exploration and have the potential to do great things in the field of science.
My students love exploration in the science classroom. They are intrigued by all that has been studied this school year and want to learn more. Our unit on tectonic plates and earthquakes is beginning soon. They would love to work with real equipment so that they can work like real scientists.
Our school is a pubic school in the city.
We are a STEAM school (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics). My students represent a diverse group. They love hands-on science and thrive in this type of learning environment. Many have learning difficulties, but continue to be positive and eager to learn. My students love to be challenged and have the ability to do great things in the world.
My Project
A working seismometer offers my students the opportunity to work with real equipment just as a scientist would. My students will do real time observations and documentation of the slightest of ground activity to the greatest. My goal is to have them feed this collection of data to our local news station in a real-time setting. Students will gather information from the seismograph, work on data analysis, and monitor plate activity in our area. This project will continue throughout the year, not just during the time I am teaching the unit. I want them to be excited about learning, be lifelong learners, and have the ability to experience science through hands-on exploration.
My students are worth it.
They have great potential, are excited about learning, and would benefit greatly from the experience of working with real science equipment. They love to learn and enjoy being challenged. Our country needs scientists and engineers. I want my students to be those scientists and engineers. They are our future!!
