The temperature sensors that were part of this project changed understanding heat energy, heat transfer and temperature in a big way. \r\n\r\nStudents used the temperature sensors to see the difference in temperatures between two liquids in two test tubes at the same time. The lab using the sensors was amazing. Students walked away from the experience with a much better understanding of heat transfer. \r\n\r\nNow imagine doing an engineering design challenge that replicates the drastic cold temperature on Mars. The temperature sensors allowed students to see the difference between the temperature inside the \"astronaut habitat\" and outside. \r\n\r\nIn addition, we tested different materials that could be used for making mittens and gloves. \r\n\r\nThank you for supporting my students, their curiosity and their future in STEM.","fullyFundedDate":1663723583366,"projectUrl":"project/temperature-sensors-to-heat-things-up/6679273/","projectTitle":"Temperature Sensors To Heat Things Up","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Moore","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2844716_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1456671863639","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2844716"},{"teacherId":2844716,"projectId":6361837,"letterContent":"As I have learned over the years, physical science concepts are challenging for most students to grasp. The materials in this project were able to change that into better understanding for my students. \r\n\r\nThe diffraction glasses provided students the opportunity to view spectrometry in a very visual way. They walked the school (we have many different lighting systems) and were able to see the various colors of the visible light spectrum. \r\n\r\nThe wave apparatus gave a visual way to see a longitudinal wave and a transverse wave. They could easily see the trough, crest, wavelength and amplitude, along with the compression and rarefaction. They were so excited about learning this material. \r\n\r\nThe conductivity apparatus provided hands-on labs for the classroom, again helping students grasp the challenges concepts of physical science. \r\n\r\nI cannot thank you enough for supporting this project.","fullyFundedDate":1659463268530,"projectUrl":"project/getting-into-physical-science/6361837/","projectTitle":"Getting Into Physical Science","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Moore","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2844716_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1456671863639","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2844716"},{"teacherId":9725041,"projectId":8731792,"letterContent":"I was honored and grateful for the chance to give my 7th grade science students a hands on experience in biology by introducing them to an activity most don't experience until high school. While the school year was busy wrapping up the last week before spring break, classes had a unique opportunity to learn about the brain and to see up close its structures and makeup.\r\n\r\nAlthough we'd already completed a unit on structures and functions of organs and organ systems months before, we hadn't had the chance to look more closely at one of the specific organs. So we spent a couple class periods examining the roles of specific parts of the human brain, and the mini lesson culminated in the most authentic learning experience of the year.\r\n\r\nI was particularly impressed by my students' following of lab safety procedures and their eagerness to explore the sheep brains with a scientific mindset. Rather than just watch their teacher do a dissection, the opportunity to dissect an organ in a real lab setting will almost certainly stay with them well after they leave middle school.","fullyFundedDate":1733751447908,"projectUrl":"project/middle-school-frog-dissection/8731792/","projectTitle":"Middle School Frog Dissection!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Estes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9725041_orig.jpg?crop=1158,1158,x0,y227&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725366060961","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9725041"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1537","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":756,"numTeachers":44,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":38,"percentWhite":26,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":27,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.0,"schoolId":1537,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wiley Magnet Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wiley Magnet Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/winston-salem-forsyth-county-schools/wiley-middle-school/1537"}
