My Students

No place to rest our weary heads - That is the motto currently in my autism classroom. Autism students are sensory deprived and need frequent breaks. The pillow set will assist to meet sensory needs as they will provide a comfortable and safe environment for my autism students to relax in.

All of the eight students in my K-5th self-contained class have autism.

Autism is a neurological disorder that often results in individuals having severe sensory deprivations. Their 5 senses are either over or under stimulated so creating a sensory rich environment is crucial for them. My autism students come from a moderately impoverished school. Funding for necessary sensory items is not available for our students.

My Project

Typical autism students lack the ability to control their emotions and behaviors in difficult circumstances. When autism students get over stimulated, frustrated, and upset, negative or unwanted behaviors can arise resulting in meltdowns. Meltdowns are very disturbing for students with autism as the students usually do not have the capacity to deescalate behaviors without the intervention of others. Every autism classroom should provide a comfortable place of security and refuge for the students. The pillow set will be a great asset to my classroom. The pillows will allow my young students to take the needed frequent breaks in a comfortable, clean, and attractive environment. The pillow set comes with four easy to clean pillows that have removable machine-washable covers.

This project is so important because my autism students need an environment that offers a sensory rich diet.

Autism students need to have frequent breaks so they do not get overloaded and overwhelmed. The rest area of my classroom that will have the pillows will serve two purposes: 1. to provide frequent breaks preventing many negative behaviors or meltdowns, and 2.to provide a calming environment for students who are experiencing distress.
