This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
There are many different ways to treat sensory overload. One way to reduce this tension is for people with symptoms to reduce it themselves. Being able to identify ones own triggers of sensory overload can help reduce, eliminate, or avoid them.
I teach a special education class in a Title 1 district.
My students have autism, significant developmental delays, and cerebral palsy. Some senses may be turned up too high and some turned down too low. As a result, the data that comes in tends to be distorted, and it is very hard to perceive a person's environment accurately.
My Project
Sensory integration activities are the lifeline to providing and achieving the necessary challenges. The inflatable pillow will aid a child to take these extra movements and positions and help give input to the sensory system which in turn helps organize and calm the body. The Fidget Caterpinch has sections with "mushable" liquid. It helps warm up fingers and strengthens intrinsics. The weighted lap pad pillow will will provide increased proprioceptive input to help the child calm and organize and the deep pressure vest is a great solution for the sensory-seeking-pleasure loving -fidgeter.
Having just a few sensory items will help us to begin to develop and build our sensory diet and allow students who are experiencing sensory overload to identify their own triggers which can help reduce, eliminate, or avoid them.
