My students need table easels, drawing pencils, acrylic paint, and brushes to create their self portraits.

I teach art at WEDJ PCS in NE, Washington, DC. The 4th grade drawing and painting classes are about to embark on an awesome self-portrait project. This project is great because the students get to challenge themselves artistically and feel proud of the end results.
The 4th grade students are full of energy and creativity!
They are attentive during lessons and show diligence during their work time. A wide variety of music helps to create the right work atmosphere on any given day. Students enter the classroom and spend a few minutes doodle drawing to get in the "art zone". The thirty second Jeopardy theme song lets them know that its time to transition by putting their drawings away and turning their attention to the days lesson. The 4th graders are currently building their observation drawing skills and they get better with every drawing. They have drawn their shoes, hole punches, tools, and a variety of interesting items from the thrift store. Our focus is not to draw "good" but to draw what we see. These preliminary exercises will surely help each student succeed on their self portrait assignment.
There are many steps to creating a self portrait. For this assignment students will receive a printed photograph of themselves, draw it onto a canvas, and fill in with acrylic paint. Each student will do a practice drawing on paper before they move to canvas. The drawings will help them sort out composition and make notes about color schemes. Proper brushes that do not shed and quality paint are essential! Our classroom is tiny, so easels will really help to maximize table and counter space.
Donations to this project will give these artists the opportunity to create a work of art that they can be proud of.
My goal is to help each student see the value of thinking, planning, creating, and sharing their art. A fully funded project will surely help to accomplish this goal.
