Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

By the time my students have reached fourth grade, they have tuned out much of the world around them. I want to give them tools that will have them looking, really looking, at the wonderful world they live in.

Our students live in a neighborhood filled with apartment buildings, with their hardworking parents.

Many have no place to play outside, and many parents keep their children inside to keep them safe. They have not had much experience with the natural world around them. Because of this, they have difficulty understanding its value.

My Project

I want to provide my students with a microscope that can plug into a computer so that they can see and discuss the microorganisms that can be found in a drop of pond water. I want to give them cameras so that they will look carefully at plants, insects, and other things they can find just around our school playground. By taking a picture of these things, they can spend more time observing them and learning about them.

By using the tools of the microscope and cameras, they will be able to observe and record parts of the natural world around them.

Their curiosity will be aroused. Once they start thinking about these things, they will be able to value them and to see how they relate to each other. This will help in them learning about foodwebs and the biodiversity of life, which is a fourth grade standard. But beyond that, I know this will help them think about how this biodiversity is key to earth's survival.
