Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bill Gates once said, "Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important." I agree completely, but where is the technology in our classrooms, in our school? It seems that technology is taking a back seat in many schools.

My students are smart, driven, and very verbal.

They are 95% Hispanic and 5% African American. Most of them do not have a computer or other technology at home. Our school provides a safe environment away from gangs and socioeconomic limitations. They are exposed to violence and socioeconomic limitations, like lack of food, that others take for granted. In my classroom, they get to dream, the sky is the limit. They've planned future traveling plans, designed their dream homes, and have become celebrated community heroes. The classroom is a safe haven where dreaming high is encouraged. Nothing is impossible when they dream, write, and share their future plans. They would thrive as enthusiastic learners if they are provided with the memories that will last a lifetime. They will experience and recollect their memories in a whole new way.

My Project

My students have continued from year to year to communicate via US mail with their penpals. The communication gates are wide open with the goal of improving writing skills. Students from Washington State, Pennsylvania, and Mexico City, have been in communication with my class for the last 15 years. Stamps are not getting any cheaper so perhaps it is time to adopt faster ways of communicating via emails and Skyping through the Internet. For this reason, my students need an iMac. This computer will be our main means of communication. Our classroom currently has one HP computer which is outdated and crashes in the middle of opening a game or typing an essay. I depend on your generosity to begin communicating with our penpals via the Internet. My students will also be writing to them through emails. The writing process will still be reinforced by with rough drafts and final drafts.

I need your generosity to launch my students in the new technology era.

My students will still communicate with their penpals in written form via emails. But the most exciting part of this project will be seeing each other via the phenomenon of Skyping. Please help me help my students embrace their penpals, communication, and technology in a whole new way. Technology will give my students an educational advantage.
