My Students

To understand an abstract concept, my students need various visuals and audio to truly understand their sound and light unit.

My students attend a Title 1 school in Virginia.

They spend an hour in science class every day learning through hands-on activities. My 96 students are so enthusiastic about their science topics this year which have included rocks, oceanography, cells/kingdoms, and sound/light. The students in my classes are constantly engaged and looking to learn more by thinking critically. With an ECD population of 40% and little access to technology at home, my students love the chance to learn with technology in the classroom. When technology is involved, the students are eager to participate and be creative. Once this type of hands-on lesson is completed, the students never forget it and forever refer back to the activity.

My Project

The students will act out sound by showing energy moving through various mediums until it reaches the eardrum. Each group of students will act out their pitch with their own camcorder so that they can discover the curriculum on their own, use teamwork to problem solve, and be constantly engaged. These performances will be added to the school website for all the students to watch and visualize this abstract concept. For the second part of the unit, the students will need to understand light, specifically the color spectrum. To make this second abstract concept come to life for students, they will each receive a copy of the lyrics to "ROY G BIV," by They Might Be Giants. For this unit, the song will be played through the iHome Portable Speaker System to amplify the volume. I know that the students will be much more engaged, willing to sing, and find it easier to follow along with the lyrics when the iPod can be played through an iHome portable speaker system.

Donations to this project will impact the entire fifth grade during a critical and challenging unit.

I have played songs for the students in my class with just my iPod, but it is very difficult for them all to hear it without speakers. I have at least two songs for every unit, so the iHome speakers will be used all year long, not just for this particular unit. Through my years of teaching, I have found that the students are very visual and audio learners and I want to teach to their strengths.
