School-Community Garden: A Peaceful Place to be the Change

My students need composting, a time lapse cam, soil pH meter, a water tower and garden kits to further develop our school-community garden.

My Students

A garden is a place that offers a sense of peace, stability, and hope. All of these are aspects of life that our students need assistance with. Our school-community garden offers great learning opportunities and a peaceful retreat.

Our students are growing up in a neighborhood that is struggling with both violence and poverty.

Often times, my students need a retreat. They need a peaceful place to go, to learn, to serve. Our students love getting dirty, getting involved with gardening and enjoy being able to learn outside. The young men and women within our school have a desire to improve their lives and the lives of people in our community. The community garden that we started just last year provided students, teachers, and community members at the local food pantry with fruits and vegetables throughout the summer. When students see their impact, the become better stewards of our environment.

My Project

We are requesting a variety of garden materials to improve our current school-community garden. Two compost bins and a digital soil pH monitor will allow us to compost our own compost for the garden while monitoring the pH of the soil and compost. We are also requesting a time lapse camera that will enable students to observe the process of plants growing in our own garden over time. Lastly, we are requesting 11 circular plant beds and a water tower that will enable the planting and maintenance of fruits, vegetables and flowers.

Our students need a peaceful refuge within our city and neighborhood.

They need the opportunity to learn about environmental science through gardening and giving back to our community. This offers students a chance to work together and change our community. I often use Gandhi's great words in my classroom: "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Please help us be the change our world needs!
