Growing up, science & social studies were without a doubt my favorite subjects in school. The hands-on activities and engaging stories rich with exciting information provided an opportunity to escape from the often mundane reading & math instruction that filled up a great portion of the school day.
My kindergarten students come to me at the beginning of the year as "blank slates." They are buzzing with curiosity, and they are eager to begin their educational journey in order to find out more about themselves and the world around them.
However, in the rural Mississippi Delta, many of my students have do not have access to the kinds of resources and opportunities needed to expand their perspectives on worldly topics. Some of these students have limited access to reading materials both at home and at school that engage them in science and social studies topics, and some lack the necessary financial resources to travel outside of their hometown. Furthermore, the school's curriculum is heavily biased toward reading and math instruction, leaving little time or opportunity to immerse the students in the social sciences. My students will learn about new people, new places and new things that will hopefully spark their interest and lead them to love asking questions about the world.
As a teacher who values the importance of well-rounded instruction, I would love to have simple yet engaging activities for my students to enjoy that will help them to understand a wide variety of science and social studies topics. The "Let's Find Out" series by Scholastic would allow my children to not only strengthen their fundamental reading skills required by the new Common Core curriculum, but it would also help them to foster a love of "bigger" issues and participating hands-on with worldly topics. Additionally, this resource will provide them with an entertaining look at nonfiction texts, and it will provide them with ways to interact with the information, which will further their confidence in their reading comprehension and application skills.
In order for my students to receive the most balanced instruction possible, as well as to thrive in their communities and see themselves as a "bigger piece" of the puzzle, they need to be able to have fun learning while also taking ownership of their educational experience.
These kid-friendly and engaging materials will help to put my students on a path of expanded opportunity in a place where they might not otherwise have access to this kind of valuable information.
