Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One hundred percent of our students are on free and reduced price lunch. We are a diverse and vibrant community with many immigrants from other countries. The students are curious and eager to learn about our world which makes Scholastic News a perfect vehicle for exploring other countries.
I'm posting a project for 24 subscriptions to Scholastic News magazine and Science Spin.
I'm planning on using these resources in a variety of ways including classroom discussions, art-based enrichment projects, researching a specific magazine topic further through technology resources, and improving overall reading comprehension of informational texts.
My Project
Navigating through informational text is quite different than navigating through literature, so I plan on developing mini-lessons on nonfiction text organization so that the students can access a variety of other forms of informational texts. Students do not get enough experiences with real-life text, and Scholastic News is certainly an excellent step in the right direction. They must be able to read for information, and this colorful format will get them on their way!
My students need to be exposed to the world around them.
They need up-to-date references and materials that give them experiences with reading for information. Scholastic News is the perfect tool to achieve all of this and more. It is very exciting that it also includes Science Spin which will contain up-to-date science stories.
