This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are struggling learners, but are motivated to improve. They are several grades below 6th grade in reading and in math. They are English Language Learners that are working hard to learn the academic language of English. I want my students to feel confident in reading and math.

My school has students that are from low income families.

Most of the students in my classroom are unable to bring school supplies. Our school tries to meet the needs of our large population of students, but needs help. All of our teachers purchase paper, ink, and other supplies for our students because we want to give our students an equal opportunity for learning. Our students struggle to learn, but teachers try to make it engaging and exciting.

My Project

Last year I purchased Scholastic Magazines for my classroom and my students eagerly awaited their arrival each month. We have few text resources and the textbooks we are provided are very challenging for students at lower reading levels. Scholastic Magazines have an online feature that make it exciting and engaging for students. They can see the beautiful images and supplemental videos that help build students' background so that they can have access to what we are reading. In addition, Scholastic has text features that aid in students' reading comprehension; such as highlighting keywords and terms and having titles and graphics. These magazines can also be read at different levels. You can lower the reading level on the computer for students that our struggling in reading. I have never used the math magazine, but it says that it connects math to real world applications. For my students the real world application of math is vital to their engagement and understanding.

Your donation to this project will help students that are at a pivotal point in their educational career.

They will be heading to middle school next year and can either be unprepared to meet the demand or can be confident and ready to meet the the challenges of middle school. It is at this time in my students' career where they begin to make plans for their future. Please help make a difference in keeping these students in school by boosting their confidence.
