Savvy Scientists

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

So how many trees have you killed this week? I hear this on a weekly basis when I request a minimum of 500 copies be made by the main office. Who knew that trying to teach science to 150 6th and 7th grade students could be so detrimental to the environment. Funny how I stress the 3 R's in class.

I work with 150 6th and 7th grade students at an urban, public school in New York.

My 6th graders come to me as blank slates, as far as science is concerned. In elementary school such an emphasis is placed on Math and English that Science tends to be put on the back burner. However, these students are eager to learn, and eager to please. Many of them take it upon themselves to research facts and information online, or watch the countless shows on Animal Planet, National Geographic, and the Discovery Channel, just so they can take part in the discussions of the class. These students look forward to taking part in inquiry, and love to ask the question "Why?" On multiple occasions, they have left me stumped, and researching the answers to their questions. The majority of these students do not have much, but they do not ask for much either. Something they all ask for is a mentor. They all want someone to take an interest in their education, their well-being, and their achievements.

My Project

My students need a document reader so they may transcribe their science labs into their journals, as well as, check the accuracy of their data more efficiently. I teach 5 classes, 5 periods a week. I average a completion of 3 lab activities over the course of these 5 periods. I strive to engage my students in as many hands-on activities as is possible. Unfortunately, if you do the math, I request an approximate 500 photocopies each week. Keep in mind, many of the lab activities my students complete are multiple page documents. While handing out a prepared lab worksheet is easy, it is a habit that wastes resources (something we tell our students NOT to do), and lets students off the hook. If I had an ELMO to hook up to the projector I already have, my students would be held responsible for writing out the steps of the Scientific Method in their science journals, science journals that otherwise sit and collect dust. Students would refine their skills as data collectors and scientists.

By using an ELMO projector in the science classroom, my students can continue to engage in hands-on activities that make science "science." In addition, my students can learn to play a more active role in their education.

The transition from elementary to middle school is difficult, however, the transition from middle to high school is even tougher, if students are not well-prepared. Our students need to learn how to become more self-sufficient, and take an interest in their own education.
