Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."----Benjamin Franklin With the help of Disney, I want to give my students the opportunity to learn about the various types of pollutants that pollute our oceans as well as a not so ordinary class pet.
My 33 students come from a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single parent, multiple-family, foster, migrant, and military to name a few.
Many of my students come to me below grade level in reading and/or math. We are a Title 1 school with the majority of our students receiving free/reduced lunch. Many of my students would rather be at school than at home. Knowing this, I want to make my classroom the most enriching learning environment I can.
My Project
My students have been begging me for a class pet. And, well, I don't like to do anything simple. I researched class pets and discovered the Desktop Jellyfish Tank. Jellyfish.....just might be the coolest class pet ever. Having 3 real life jellyfish as a class pet is a great way for students to learn about and get up and personal with ocean life. The Ocean Trash Can Kits will correspond with our class pets. These kits will allow my students to simulate the problems associated with acid rain and other forms of pollution and predict the effects of these pollutants on the ocean and its inhabitants. Students will research the sources and effects of the pollutants. They will learn the present laws and propose actions to prevent and/or reduce the problem of ocean pollution. My students will write, edit, do artwork and lay out a newsletter to distribute among the school in order to educate them about ocean pollution.
This is a great hands-on activity to educate students about environmental science with a focus on ocean pollution and ocean life.
With the help of Disney and citizen philanthropists, this project can become a reality. Did I mention that my students are ecstatic to have jellyfish as a class pet?!
