My Students

With the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, our wetlands are in dire need of everyone's help. As a classroom teacher, I can help by educating my young students about the vanishing coast and enlist their help in saving our delicate ecosystem.

I currently teach an inclusion class of 4th graders in Southeast Louisiana.

About 65% of the students in my school qualify for free or reduced lunch and 23% schoolwide qualify for Special Education services. The school serves 4th, 5th, and 6th grades and over 600 students. Our coastal wetlands here in Louisiana have been vanishing at rapid rates. With the most recent disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, I have never been more worried about the future of the beautiful, unique, and necessary coastal wetlands. Of course, as a teacher, I immediately thought of how my students and I can help! Read on to hear our story...

My Project

To begin my project, I am requesting several books about Louisiana's wetlands to introduce the topic and educate my students about the increasingly desperate situation. I have also requested a compost kit so we can start making our own soil and hopefully cut down on school garbage. A "Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle" kit will allow my students to learn about limiting their impact on our environment. After we have learned about the wetlands and what we can do, I plan on growing a small garden at school to plant trees that help to slow the erosion of our coast. Ultimately, I envision our class planting the trees in local swamps to be an active role in the quest to save our coast.

Please help us Save Our Wetlands here in Louisiana!

Not only will our project have an immediate impact after it is complete, my students will have learned the importance of wildlife preservation. Furthermore, anything that YOU donate will be matched by 50% the new film "Furry Vengeance".
