This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have incubated salmonoid eggs successfully several times. In an effort to improve habitat study and relate local conditions to water quality, we need to more accurately measure dissolved oxygen levels.

Our school serves students of low economic status and has a high percentage of students on free/reduced lunch program.

We also serve many English language learners. Our school is in year 7 of program improvement. We have many wonderful students who are eager to learn and hope for bright futures. Hands-on experiences and investigating local habitats fosters community involvement as well as reinforces math and science skills. The Salmon and Trout Education Program is ideal for connecting science content and community involvement.

My Project

We will be able to relate physical conditions of an area with accurate water quality data. Since oxygen levels are a critical factor in the survival of salmon at all life stages, oxygen is critical to the survival of the species itself. My students need access to an oxygen meter to measure local water quality. Students will see that polluted, dirty, or warm water is detrimental to a healthy environment for salmonoids as well as humans!

Students will protect their own community when they are aware of factors affecting it.

I've had students tell me 20 years after this experience what an impact it had on them as 6th graders!
