Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Video games can't be the only way our children are engaged! My role as an educator is to instill the questions of: what, how, and why, while teaching science concepts! Students don't learn about nature outside anymore; my job is to bring it to them!

Our school is a K-5 campus with less then 200 students!

We are a Title I school located in a small, rural town. More then 70% of our students come from a low-socioeconomic household. Our school and staff is sometimes the safest and most reliable location for our students. They may not have the most of everything at home, but they still have the drive and willingness to learn!

My Project

Sure, you have learned about food chains and what animals eat other animals. But...have you ever dissected owl poop? Probably not! Owl pellets are just the beginning of items I selected for my wish list! Butterfly larva create the always awe-inspiring experience of visual metamorphosis no matter how many times you may have seen it before. Test tubes assist with the learning of so many science concepts. In class, we use enlarged test tubes to learn about the concepts of: density, solubility, buoyancy, and much more! I am requesting 6 packs of test tubes, 4 packs of owl pellets, and 1 pack of butterfly larva. Although all students LOVE the hands-on experiences noted above, my first priority is to create a safe learning environment for my students. Before having the “fun moments” in class we always start off the year learning about science safety equipment. Throughout the year my students are required to use safety glasses for a variety of lessons. I am requesting 2 sets for them.

While state funding and district budgets are decreasing, the rigor of what our students must learn is increasing.

While my funds decline, it becomes more difficult to create the hands-on science classroom in which my students thrive best. Being provided the assortment of items on my wish list will allow me to create teachable moments that engross my students. Funding my project is important, because educating my students the best way possible is important, plain and simple.
