Safe Food Handling for Special Needs Students

My students need a food chemistry kit, workbooks and food safety exploration materials so that they can learn concretely, and first-hand, about food composition and safe food handling.

My Students

My special needs students working in vocational studies need to understand food safety, food handling, and food science. These students need a concrete way to see and feel what is happening with food when it is handled. The materials in this kit will give them just that experience.

My students in a large, comprehensive, urban high school have started and run a cafe that serves the faculty, staff, and students of our community.

They are excited about developing new skills and new programs within the cafe. My students, who struggle to overcome significant disabilities, are developing new confidence and new opportunities for themselves in the future. We use the cafe to teach a full range of food service skills. It's also a practical lab for a wide range of vocational skills, social skills, applied math, technical writing, and even science experiments. Everyone gets the food handlers card and works in an environment that carries the social capital that skilled baristas in our community have built up for us. It's a therapeutic environment that only comes with the real respect derived from real skills mastery and real service to others.

My Project

These materials include a really extensive classroom kit for exploring food chemistry. This will tie our vocational program into our science course and greatly expand the range of understanding when talking about food handling and food safety. Even better, this package includes a really graphic object lesson in hand washing and the spread of germs. The "Glo Germ" powder dramatically demonstrates the effects of both proper and improper hand washing and also demonstrates the spread of germs through touching and handling. The Glo Germ powder looks invisible during the demonstration until the UV light is shined on it and then it appears bright and shiny on everything that has not been cleaned or has been contaminated. It's a really memorable experience that the kids won't soon forget!

Safe food handling is not only a job skill, it's a life skill!

Our students need to practice safe food handling in order to keep their jobs in food service as adults AND they need to practice safe food handling in order to keep themselves and their families healthy throughout their lives. These materials will allow my students to fulfill their science requirements for their modified diplomas, gain crucial vocational knowledge and experience, and prepare for long and healthy lives as adults.
