"The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake."
- First Lady Michelle Obama at the Let’s Move! launch on February 9, 2010
The students in my classroom are kindergarten and first grade students that are impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder and other communication related disorders.
Students with Autism experience impairments with social skills, communication, stereotypical/repetitive behaviors and unusual responses to sensory input. My students come from across the school district from a variety of socioeconomic situations and backgrounds to come to this class, where they receive specially designed instruction in all content areas. Their day is very structured and routinized in order for them to learn school routines as well as to feel comfortable in an environment that is predictable. They receive instruction in academics, social skills, life skills and communication, as well as receive training on how to self-regulate their responses to sensory input.
My Project
Our school is a pilot school in the Let's Move! Active School project launched by Michelle Obama. Through this project, kids are building healthier habits and healthier lives! We are so excited to be part of this project, and use the lessons to do regular brain breaks during academics, challenging track activities and yoga and dance time daily!
Now, we're looking for something more! We want to further explore movement and activity at the Portland Children's Museum's "Run! Jump! Fly!" exhibit! Your donation would help us get there!
By donating to this project, you are giving students with special needs the opportunity to further explore movement, fitness and science with a trip to the Children's Museum.
You will help grow curious learners and encourage healthy exploration of healthy lifestyles!
