My Students

"Science is not a spectator sport, the only way YOU can learn it is by doing it!" I want to bring science to life for my students and not just teach from a text book. This is my motto that I use throughout the school year and want to instill in my students.

You can only learn so much science from a text book.

How a student truly learns science is by experiencing it through discovery and hands-on activities. Examining rocks and minerals, and studying microscope slides is a great way to help launch a student's love of learning science. Our school has a diverse student body. Most of them come from low economic situations where school supplies are limited. Many of our students only worry about learning what is important to them and do not want to think outside the box. We are trying to provide them with opportunities to use their imagination and expand that box.

My Project

I find that students learn best through hands-on activities. Therefore, I would like to introduce rocks and minerals by providing them samples to look at, and test to try and identify the common rocks and minerals. I am also requesting microscope slides to help students better understand the structure of cells. This is such a hard concept for students to understand as cells are so small and not something that we can just see with our naked eye. The beakers and graduated cylinders will allow my students to be able to participate in many different measuring labs as well.

Your donation will assist me in the enrichment of the elementary experience for my students.

Hands-on learning and making connections are essential for sixth graders to learn. The hands-on activities would be a the most effective way for my students to learn about rocks and minerals and cells.
