Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to read but often lack foundational skills. I want them to grab the love of reading and find success with it. Students will be able to see that reading a book can be an adventure worth jumping into.

My classroom is filled with 29 students in an urban setting.

They are eager learners but they often become discouraged because it is hard for them to be successful. They come from an urban area where they do not always have the same opportunities as other students might have. Some of my students are learning English as a second language so they need a tremendous amount of support in being successful. We have a wonderful large school where the teachers know their students. It is set in an inner city and students do not always come prepared with the foundational skills needed to read and succeed. Sometimes the only reading they will do is at school. Parents are genuinely concerned about their students and trust the school to help them grow. Students are comfortable with the teachers and it makes for a strong community. It is great to see kids coming back to visit their former teachers.

My Project

With a reading rug in our class it will help us develop a central location for us to meet comfortably and reach all learners. It helps build this sense of community that is so important for success. The extra pillows are geared to those students who have some "wiggle trouble!" and need that extra support to sit for long enough to enjoy a good book. The learning stations will put the pencils, letter stamps and stamp pads to good use. Students learn more by doing in order to build those foundational skills to read. By having some hands on materials, students will become more engage and practice those skills which they need to read. I want them to know that learning can be fun! The pencils and sharpener will definitely keep our classroom ready to write as our students don't often come with the supplies that they need for the year. It will be a great boost to have these supplies at hand and make our reading corner rock!

With these supplies our students will be motivated to read which is the first step.

The students will be empowered to direct their learning independently at the stations . This practice will definitely solidify the road to reading. This also helps me in practicing beginning skills in order to move them to the level where they need to be as many come below reading levels. By the end of the year many of them will be reading on level and hopefully be eager readers for the rest of their lives.
